By DeShaun Davis, DD8 News
May 9, 2013

You can never go wrong with a Huffington Post interview. Jacob Soberoff interviews Tyler Perry and Tina Gordon Chism on the film 'Peebles." I wrote in a question that Jacob asked Tyler about his usage of other writers/directors. Tyler begins to talk about 34th Street, a production arm he has created to do just that. Regardless of your opinion of Tyler Perry and his empire, watch this interview and gleam from the information and let the story serve as an inspiration.

Yesterday I spoke with Aricka Gordon-Taylor as she stands in the midst of a media storm with rapper Lil Wayne and his camp over offensive lyrics from the song "Karate Chop." Many new developments are happening with this story. AP is reporting that PepsiCo has released Wayne from an endorsement deal because of the "controversy." They claim there was a mutual separation based on "creative differences." There are so many aspects of this that I find disturbing. We have been close with the Emmett Till story for over a year in production of 55TillNow. Therefore the story and life of Till has become close to my consciousness. Recently the mayor of Glendora, Johnny Thomas contacted me and asked what could we do to deal with the lyrics. Mayor Thomas runs a Museum in Till's honor that is located a walking distance from the bridge where Till's body thrown over. During the filming of 55TillNow I personally walked in the river where Till's body was found. Being in that environment and speaking to people like Mayor Johnny Thomas that have close connections to this story makes comments like "beat that P**** like Emmett Till…" really difficult to just ignore.

The question now is how do we deal with situations like this. How do we hold people accountable to what they do with their influence. The power we have in life carries a level accountability. Or does it? Beyond the civil rights slap in the face or the backwards dance this represents to us as a race, think about the family and listen to what was said in this song and ask yourself is this ok. But again the question is, what should we do to repair the damage that has been done. Is an apology enough? Is the fact that PepsiCo released their association with Wayne enough? How do we remove from the minds of millions of kids lyrics that they repeat over and over and over again.

If you had a child that was brutally murdered, mutilated and the people that perpetrated the crime were found innocent. How would you feel listening to people quote a sexual act as a reference to the face of your dead child? I mean how dark can your heart be to think that is ok. But again my question is, what do we do? Who should be held accountable?

In my opinion this should be a wake up call and something should be done in a major way to demonstrate that this behavior should not be tolerated. This may not do anything about the millions of other lyrical issues to be examined but THIS ONE made me speak up.

From the womb of Kingston Jamaica, MaRio Fidel  was truly a jewel to be found.  Transported from Jamaica to the rugged inner city of Queens New York,  he would learn to survive. Shadowing his brother Qwan who ruled the street life, everything he saw became his passion. He became fixated with lust for money, status, women, power...he wanted it all. Known to his hood as "baby face" he would use his charm to make things happen.

One more deal to make and the future would be set.
MaRio voyaged to England, against all warnings and faced death, torment, and pain  Locked away and left for dead inside the Wormwood Scrubs Prison, neighbor to murders, molesters, confined to a cell for 23 hours a day with no toilet… inside the pits of hell just when he felt all hope was lost...He met the real Jesus.

StageCinema play directed and written by DeShaun Davis based on the life of Fidel M. Donaldson. Starring Christopher Davis as MaRio Fidel.

DD8 @ Eddie Murphy's "One Nite Only" airing on SpikeTV

Lights, Camera, Action! That’s the typical call of attention for the start of something big in Hollywood, but on Saturday, November 3, 2012, the calls were for Hollywood’s African-American A-listers like Quest Love and The Roots, Anika Noni Rose, Holly Robinson Peete, Terry and Rebecca Crews, Jimmy Jam, Tracy Morgan and of course, the guest of honor, Eddie Murphy, who were blasted by paparazzi and press on the hottest ‘black carpet’ of the season. The crowd of stars gathered for Spike TV’s “Eddie Murphy: One Night Only” in celebration of the veteran comedic genius’ decades of contribution to entertainment. Spike TV left no stone unturned from the front door to the stage set, pulling out all the stops. From the moment guests arrived, their wish was the demand of the more than 150 wait staff holding choice top-shelf beverages and hors d’oeuvres fit for royalty. Murphy’s final stop wrapped in the press room, where he was asked about the possibility of a "Coming to America" sequel. Murphy hesitated then responded by saying [paraphrase] "Nobody would come see that (expletive). I’m middle aged. What? He gets divorced in that one?" - “Eddie Murphy: One Night Only” on Spike TV.
